Yeah, C. Viper looks like a refugee from an SNK game...and in fact might be a weird pastiche of Vice (from King of Fighters). Not that I really mind that, Vice was one of my favorites of that lot.
I really like the animation. Everyone seems a lot more energetic and dangerous in this one.
I'm not sure Street Fighter is ready for 3D yet. It looks really cool in the trailer, but the fact that each animation that wasn't covered up by a huge flash of light (except 1) was only used once in the trailer is... frightening. And the animation that was reused stood out terribly (Dhalsim's getting pwnt animation, at :58 and then again a second later).
Repetitive animation looks much more obvious in 3D. They shouldn't have made the move to 3D unless they were ready to use fluidity-promoting goodness. If you look, the transition from one animation to another is just one frame long. BAM, back to normal standing position. Even Tekken 5, with super-awesome fluidness, has some parts that stand out as terribly repetitive.
Cue "Why don't YOU make a game like that if you're so smart?".
Also, I been thinking, and I'm wondering, does Tekken/Soul Calibur/whatever possibly have an advantage cause they can move in 3D space? Maybe part of the animation's smoothieness is that roundhouse kicks make you fly a bit backwards (or forwards) in the truly 3D games.
Maybe Namco is just better at animating. Who knows.
I'm pretty sure Soul Calibur is full of repeated motions too, especially when getting hit. Honestly, I don't mind it. SFIV looks like a good game, and I suspect that you're being a bit nitpicky, Timmeh. :)

Yeah, it is. It's not as obvious as what I see here, though.
Maybe you're right, and I'm just so afraid that it will suck that I actually believe it will. I just fell in love with the art in some of the SF games, and I don't love this the same way.
Side note: We can't tell anything about the gameplay of it yet, but I don't expect to be let down by that. Many an hour will I spend getting killed by Vasya.
EDIT: Of course, people complained about Zelda's move to 3D, Mario's move to 3D, Metroid's move to 3D, and all 3 of those spawned the best games in their respective series. (OoT, SM64, and MP)
So you never know.
EDIT: Even Final Fantasy went that way. Wtf, that's a weird trend.
I noticed the slight jerkiness of the SF animation too and I think that it was done on purpose. The first SF games were like 2-3 frames of animation for a move and that was it. I think they were just trying to remain loyal to the old feel while at the same time making something new and exciting.
Perhaps. I want my SF3 animations back, though.
Superior.
Also, HOLY CRAP o_O http://www.newwavemugen.com/~zweifuss/
EDIT:
Some of this stuff is so NINJA. <3
But yeah, I prefer choppy animations to be 2D, though I can respect them trying to be true to the series or whatever.
There's OoT and SM64 and MP, and then there's Heroes 5 and Civ IV.
So yeah =/

Fri, 02/29/2008 - 3:27pmI'm with Tim; I'd rather see a 2d well-made game than a half-assed 3d one.
