Interesting developments in the land of net neutrality. Google and Verizon have partnered to propose a tiering system for internet content that has opened up quite a lot of discussion. (hint: those are all different links)
I'm still digesting everything.
Thoughts?

Thu, 08/12/2010 - 10:35pmMatthew has lots of thoughts, he talks a lot about these thoughts. Basically along the lines of, it fucking sucks, but left to their own devices, the telecoms will come up with something much much shittier. And now that the FCC has been taken out of the picture, and Congress would rather twiddle its thumbs and fight stupid partisan wars that benefit no one, there's no one to tell telecoms what they can and cannot do. You'll certainly get no policy with teeth out of Congress, who would probably just let the telecoms write their own legislation.
I guess the theory being that proactive is better than being reactive in this case.
It's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of situation. I guess, like it or not, the telecoms are going after the destruction of Net Neutrality because no one can tell them not to (unless Congress miraculously stops being a bunch of dipshits), and wouldn't it be nice to negotiate a more gentle ass-pounding if an ass-pounding is inevitable?
I know, I hate everything too. It's like, the only way I can argue against this is to somehow imagine I live in some kind of magical alternate USA where the government actually has its people's best interests at heart and not those of corporations (who now get to give 'em as much money as they damn well please).
