One of my friends used this to show me her home in Japan. Besides looking really nifty it does seem a bit creepy. It also seems that they have really only done this for very large cities. Anyone have interesting info on this new tool?

EDIT: Still, their usage of surveillance cameras to map out certain roads to such a degree is really startling!

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 6:17pmI mean some links. I couldn't find anything related to whatever you're talking about.

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 7:52pmThis here If you zoom in far enough (using the satellite) then you can actually get a camera view from the road! (in various areas, but various enough to include a few streets in Staunton!)
Sorry I forgot to add links and explain it better....I'm finally feeling the effect of only getting a few hours of sleep.

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 7:54pmI as mainly wondering how they managed to do all of that? manpower, tools, and stuff time fuzz? Argh...gonna go to bed in a min.

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 8:01pmOh, Street View? For some reason my girlfriend only discovered this a few days ago too. This "new tool" has been out for 2 years dude!
I'm on Google's side. We can't see anything we wouldn't be able to see if we just went there... so why the fuss?

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 8:13pmBecause it helps one plan a robbery! Then again...it's paying for college. :p
Actually, I'm getting an unsettling feeling at the base of it all due to the extended vision such a device can give. Sort of a relic of the resistance to change that seems embedded in humans.

Mon, 10/12/2009 - 9:03pmThe feeling I get from it is no more unsettling than the feeling I get from talking to someone in Tennessee from Michigan :P
Like you said, I think that people find it creepy just because we don't like things that are hard to understand the consequences of. But realistically, you'd be hard-pressed to use this to inflict moral damage in a way any more efficient than you could otherwise. Not that anyone even wants to.

Tue, 10/13/2009 - 3:27amThey have vans that drive around with cameras on top that get it all. You've never seen the google vans? Weird. I saw them out here when this was first introduced.

Tue, 10/13/2009 - 7:38amIt's tite. Basically, what Tim said. But what Tim is trying to say is "it's tite". Also "nobody is going to rob you based on the fact that they saw your shit on google maps. Unless your shit is not secured at all, in which case a hobo has already taken all your shit."

Tue, 10/13/2009 - 9:39amAlso, they take a loooong time between updating those street views, so chances are that photo is months or even years out of date. Not so great for housebreaking.
I like it. It's helped me a good number of times.

Tue, 10/13/2009 - 9:49amMy mom and dad used that to help them buy a house. They also used it when looking for a rental property for my brother. Our house has 3-4 different views and they are all taken in different years. We can see the progress of our house. One shot is before we moved in, when they were still building it. ONe shot has our new driveway addition...ect.
ETA: and we aren't in a big city at all Bram. The town I live in is just 6sq miles.

Tue, 10/13/2009 - 5:06pmI sent this to a few of my Stauntonian friends and one of them found a pic where the car's reflection is in the window of a shop. It looks like a smaller version of a gray SUV. At least the first half of the car didn't have a google loge on it.
I guess what scared me the most was that they have the manpower to drive around all these towns and record this. The actual capacity to record is just under that, but they both are much less creepy today.

Thu, 10/15/2009 - 9:14amI love Street View, very helpful. And as others have said, not really a tool with much evil potential. If Google started implementing real time Street View then I think that might cause more of a stir.
Yus.
Igby. Hint: if you browse the directory there is an index page with links to a bunch of photos. I haven't updated this with new Igby photos in several years though. I need to get on that.
