so, i offhandedly mentioned to my barely computer literate father that i would buy him a new pc...
he's super excited about it, so i cant renig on my offer, but he doesn't do much but cruise the internet for golf sales and read chain emails from his retired friends...
he also has tons and tons of malware installed on his machine every time i go over there, which is often, considering the number of calls i get about his computer acting up or being slow...
so, basically, what kind of machine/software setup can any of you recommend that will serve his needs and allow me to make less unplanned visits to the parentals house, especially when there aren't any leftovers? oh. and the cheaper the better =)

No adware
No malware
Fewer if any viruses
BTW: ThinkSecret pinpoints Tuesday, August 7th as the likely date for the long awaited iMac revision.
The revamped iMac will represent the first substantial upgrade to the system since it initially adopted Intel processors in January 2006, and will sport an entirely new brushed aluminum enclosure.
That's the date I'm waiting for also.

Thu, 07/19/2007 - 12:04pmOr if you want something cheaper than the iMac, since he won't need the horsepower, get a Mac Mini. You already have the peripherals, so unless the monitor is too small or whatever, there's no point in doubling up your expenditures for items you already have.
For that matter, any headless machine would be a good way to cut your expenditures.

Thu, 07/19/2007 - 12:21pmHe doesn't have the peripherals, as far as I understand; it was a laptop that died.
Also, I think he does need the horsepower. He plays WoW a lot, and he likes to PvP. He also likes addons. The iMac (the current model, and I'm assuming the next generation that Daos is waiting for) is a tremendous value.

Thu, 07/19/2007 - 12:49pmMac Mini's are also getting phased out by the end of this year as they just don't sell well enough as compared to the imac. So if you want one, get it now.

The Mac Mini being discontinued at year's end is just a rumor at this point, though. It's generally a more desirable option than an iMac for people who are interested in switching from a PC, and is arguably a better choice for anyone, financially, since monitors usually outlast CPUs.
