So, it's that time of year again when many of us will be scaring away small children from our doorsteps in an effort to keep more of the candy for ourselves... oh wait, that's me. But! As a kid, my favorite part of Halloween was coming up with a costume. So I was curious... what was the most innovative costume you've ever come up with? And which one did you like best as a kid?
I went one year as a pirate. I was all of 7 years old, and back in those days, they didn't have busty pirate wenches, so we make-upped on stubble to go with the eyepatch, and I cut up and wore one of my father's dress shirts. I also got a plastic cutlass with which I tormented my little sister. I think she was a princess that year or something.
(I also must admit that this topic was partly inspired by the thought of young Claire as a pink poodle-- part of me felt a small amount of disappointment: "What? Not a face hugger? You can only get away with that costume up until about 20 weeks!" But poodles are cute too.)

Tue, 10/21/2008 - 2:13amI dunno what I'll go as this year. I might as well go as harry potter/a phantom as I do every year. I dress in long flowy black stuff, then when it gets really hot inside the mask, I take it off and become harry potter.
I'm totally more about the candy and scaring little kids than the costumes D:

Tue, 10/21/2008 - 10:15amI once ripped off my arms and beat the little kids...but they were actually ninjas and took my arm
I once went as Link (with mirror shield too!...aka aluminum foil as the 'reflective' part) and my mom helped me make the tunic. Another year I was a mummy...but became unraveled, last year I was a zombie (50$ costume I got from a magazine...although maybe next year I'll be able to get some supplies and craft a different costume) This year I have a Chinese Traditional (semi or mock-fancy) Shirt and pants which i got at Epcot
oh--the PPL in the japanese society are making Super Smash costumes (one is Meta knight, one is Wario, one is Dark Shiek, and the last one is Ike)...if I could get ym hands on a werewolf and sci-fi costume maybe I could make some sort of Fox or Wolf costume

Tue, 10/21/2008 - 10:18amHmm, that Face Hugger costume would be amazing!
and as for the "busty pirate costume"...why is it that all the female costumes are "skanky" or sexual...Zzz...wtb more originality than costumes from the designers of fighting game characters

Tue, 10/21/2008 - 10:22amWhen I was growing up, my mom always got us those cool (albeit cheesy) costumes that were like a plastic tie on shirt/outfit with the mask of whatever girlie toys or shows were around atm. I went one year as strawberry shortcake =x. Thought one year I got to go as rainbow bright and my mom made me cool blue tights and orange yarn hair.
I was actually thinking this year of going as Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, fun makeup and I can make a yarn wig =D

Those are the larvae stages(erm pre-larvae stages...since they implant eggs into the host...so...???) of Aliens...from the movie Alien(s)(II)(and III?)(and all the other games/movies/etc)
Also (i think) Ninety posed the Question of how they grow for a tiny snake-like thing into the larger forms, and based on their highly acidic blood then they either feed off of raw materials or are aerobic

Thu, 10/23/2008 - 8:42pmA few years back a friend and I went as "Hank Potter" and "Hermi Granger". The conceit was that "Hank" was Harry years later, working as a broom salesman and in town for a sales conference, so I had the (obvious) glasses and was dressed in a stereotypical cheesy salesman-type suit, with a trade show badge (below). I don't remember what exactly my friend did for Hermione, but she wore something similar.
We gave out buttons that read "Ask Me About My Nimbus 2002" and "You Never Forget Your First Ride -- Nimbus 2002".
(I can't believe I still had this art sitting around. :D)

Fri, 10/24/2008 - 10:12pmI was pretty pleased with our costumes last year, mostly because we conceived of the idea like the night before and pulled it together over the course of the following morning/afternoon while we were at the same time trying to pull shit together for our little party.
When I was a kid, my mom made our costumes, so part of the exciting process was going to Jo-Ann's or wherever and flipping through the pattern catalogs. She made me an awesome unicorn outfit at one point that was like my most favorite thing ever.
Halloween was our college's biggest event, so people really made some awesome and witty costumes. I'll bet they are really awesome this year, with the election going on. Our college loved doing witty current events costumes. I was always jealous. My college costumes were often pretty lame. I did make a pretty awesome fairy outfit our last year, but fairies are a pretty generic costume choice. Honestly, I just wanted to try and make some wings. They came out rather well too. I'm pretty crafty, once I have an idea, I'm just not always good with the ideas. But I love trying to make things.
If I ever have kids they will have the awesomest costumes ever.

Sat, 10/25/2008 - 9:01amHaha, I love the "Hank" Potter thing. And I'm guessing those are eyeballs yes? o.o
When I was little, I was usually always something generic. A witch or a sorcerer or something. One year My mom turned an old white silk nightgown my grandmother had into a dress for me, and she fixed my hair up and made me white all over and dabbed some make-up on my face. I went as a ghost princess and I think that was my favorite costume I've ever been in. It almost made me feel like I was some ethereal maiden who comes out only on Halloween for mortal goodies.

Sat, 10/25/2008 - 12:00pmHmm....I really want a few rolls of duct tape, plastic, cardboard and coat hangers now
Armor crafting is very fun...esp w/ unique types (I made a shield-pauldron once that was designed to protect from projectiles hitting one from the side, and some hefty leg armor too)
Hmm...not sure what kind of materials would work to cover up the duct tape though (to make it look more realistic)
Also, Beth, is that Ryan person supposed to be Lil' Slugger? And <3 the Portal Costumes, nice improv work there!

Tue, 10/28/2008 - 7:16pmI was a kangaroo when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Once I went as Donald Duck. There was the year I went as a strawberry made out of felt. Then there was the year I went as Mimi from Drew Carey - pillows + bathrobe+ rubber duckie in pocket + shaving cream. What else. I was a ghost once. I went as a clown 4 times or so, just reused the same costume.
