So, since quitting WoW, I have considered doing a few other things as hobbies that are more constructive. I have also realized that, after not having TV for a year, I would like to catch up on some fav shows before their season premieres in a couple weeks. I caught up on House and I'm working on Criminal Minds - what are people's other favorites? Also, how is everquest as a computer game?

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 10:16amSome great TV on in the last few years:
The Wire
The Shield (final season just starting)
Friday Night Lights (very surprising considering the subject)
Rescue Me
Battlestar Galactica (new version, not the vintage 70s take)
Deadwood (Shakespeare goes west)
Arrested Development
Life On Mars (UK version)
I think all of the above are available on DVD (or online, if you look in the right places), and it's definitely worth starting to watch them from the beginning.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 10:56amThe new seasons of Dr. Who!!
Crazy Rambles
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 10:56amAlso...take up airsoft!

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 12:23pmI know it's main stream , but Heroes
Also Reaper (Very similar to Dead Like Me which I also recommend)
Bones
Big Bang Theory
also check out the new show Fringe (which you watch free on hulu.com) and the new terminator series which is pretty good. Though I think I'm bias on the terminator show since Shirley Manson is in it and I swoon her

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 1:16pmFringe was awful. Just plain terrible.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 2:47pmBones is a great show.
Even though it's pretty dumb sometimes, I'm also hooked on GREEK.
Entourage is one of my favorite shows.
The first season of Prison Break is worth watching, the rest are kind of dumb.
I agree with skinny on The Shield and Friday Night Lights. Both are great shows.
Also, Veronica Mars is tight, and Kristen Bell is mad hot.
Brian
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 3:04pmWhy do you say that?
Also Veronica Mars got canceled, but Kristen Bell is now on Heroes.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 3:49pmyeah, but they had 3 full seasons she could get from itunes/whatever torrent site.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 4:43pmWhich brings me to the next part of my post. After I've burned myself out on network TV, I'll need something else to do, so what do you all have as hobbies? I'm looking for ideas besides reading and job searching. I've started walking and yoga. My sister loves Heroes, so I'll definitely take a look now that someone else has recommended it, and Dr. Who, well, of course :). Thanks for the input, more is welcome. Oh, and I enjoy cooking - it's for all three of us now, but about once a week I get to do something interesting. Food prices have gone up though, it makes it tough to experiment much. I did make this fantastic pasta thing with fresh basil and fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese though - out of this world.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 4:50pmI've recently started riding my bike a lot. It's probably one of my new favorite things to do. Being outside+great exercise+getting to explore.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 5:18pmIf you have some money to spend try Airsoft...I suggest the ones that have a fps of 200~250
(any higher the BBs leave little marks and the sting tends to heighten one's temper)
if you get a group of 4~10 people it can be pretty fun, for purchases of airsoft weapons I suggest www.shortyusa.com although the reviewers seem to have English as their beta language (erm their beta's beta language...let's just say they need to take a few elementary classes in grammar)
Te rules my friends and I came up w/ was the 1 shot and one has to go back ot the respawn (or play medics where one had to be tagged by the assigned person to get revived) and if you make a CTF game...put the flag spots ahead of the player respawn areas
One could always get a CD of sorts and try to learn a new language too
or read/write poems&short stories
I hear being an assassin is always entertaining (but the medicare...not too great)
Killface
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 6:09pmI tried to give it a chance, but when the black guy/supervisor said something like "this is the most terrifying terror we've ever faced" I knew it wasn't exactly going to be the most intellectually engaging, well-written show.
It was trying desperately to be the X-Files; hell, they practically copied the intro motif directly. I was honestly shocked when I noticed that Mark Snow didn't do the music.
The 'twist' ending? Ninja please - no show ever has started with a love interest that actually lasted, so of course when the guy didn't die, he had to be a "bad" guy.
The cliched mad scientist and his son, spouting scientific-sounding nonsense in the hopes that no one was paying attention to the fact that it was all bullshit?
There was potential there, but none of the actors convinced me that they cared at all.
If they actually spent $10M on that pilot, and got that level of actor performance and special effects, they (Fox) needs to take another look at who's doing their accounting, because they got fucked but good.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 7:36pmI enjoy photography and scrapbooking. I also enjoy volunteering with the local golden retriever rescue! Oh and shopping and lunch with mah girl friends.
Brian
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 7:39pmFair enough I admit the beginning I laughed at so hard when we saw the hand print. I was like x-files version 2.0.
Still though, x-files always threw out so much BS when it came to half the segements, you got to take it with a grain of salt.
We all knew that twist was coming, it's the style of the show's producer. He somehow gets kick on thinking a twist no one will expect , when now we expect it from him.
I still enjoyed it.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 8:44pmStuff to do besides TV and WoW? Hmmm, well I play other games on the PC and various consoles. Drawing, various computer graphics projects, lots of reading. Exercise is always a good thing. I have been looking into bikes lately as I'd like to start biking again (my last bike was stolen a few years back). We also watch a lot of DVDs and various stuff that Janet downloads. Sometimes we get crazy and cook things! Also, making sangria = win.
Oh, and frisbeeing! Once Rew returns. >.>

I still need to learn how to ride a bike
but yes lots of reading would be a good idea too, these anthologies I have fro Euro lit and short fiction have a ton of interesting literature, something like that could easily kill the time

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 9:29pmStart making Chrome addons and I'll love you forever.

Sun, 09/14/2008 - 10:30pmAside from WoW and a bit of TV here and there, most of my leisure time goes to boating/biking/snowboarding (depending on the season), making music, recreational reading, learning to cook new things, and dancing/partying with the SO and friends.
I think learning to cook some interesting things really well is FTW; depending on the dish it can save you money and/or improve your health, as well as be enjoyable to eat, and it's a skill you'll very possibly use for the rest of your life.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:03amTV Shows:
Lost, True Blood, Kitchen Nightmares, Top Chef, (oldies but goodies) Carnivale, Six Feet Under
Hobbies:
I brew beer, which is awesome. I cook a lot. I find that cooking as a hobby is pretty easy because you can be like "I wanna make some artisan pizza dough", then go to google and find like four recipes for it, then try them all until you figure out what works, then make bomb pizza for everyone who now think you went to tuscany to apprentice under a master pizziolo. I table top game, which I totally consider a hobby when taking into account how much original content I put into my games. Aside from video games that's what I do most of the time. I've dabbled in cheese making (i need a separate cheese fridge before I can pick it back up) and silk screening t-shirts (I suck at that), but these are ones that have stuck around.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:05amalso, LOL at terrifying terror. I think I'm going to give it one more chance since sometimes pilots are shitty, but I don't think I'll end up being a Fringer. It was totally just x-files with a bigger budget.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:08amTry laser tag! I really enjoy myself when me and my closest go shoot each other with plastic guns whilst listening to trance with the bass turned all the way up in a room full of blacklight..
Meh, kinda sci-fisy magical in a sense..
The show Lost was ok until they started dragging it out into what it is now. One of my personal favorites was Star Trek: Next Generation, right up there with the 90's cartoon Batman and X-Men.
I used to draw, ride horses and go out into the wilderness when I was still in school and then I played alot of console games. Zelda is definitely my fav.
When you find something you really enjoy, never let it go.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:21amI don't watch tv much.
Photography/reefs tanks/wow (yes in that order) keep me pretty occupied.
Unless it's Simpsons of course ;-) Or Monty Python.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:47amOh, reef tanks! Fun. Post some pix.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:51amI second that.

Mon, 09/15/2008 - 12:03pmAside from WOW I'm a heavy mountain biker/hiker and have joined up with a few of the local outdoor chapters in my area. When not on the trails in mountain biking or hiking I love to cook (mostly Cajun and Caribbean ) , go on urban safaris (aka driving to the point of getting lost), read about physics , and recently I've been getting into a lot of DIY projects.
I just completed a Straw Pendant Light.
My next project is coil baskets out of old magazines
If you're interested in DIY I can give you a crap load of pages to look up projects. Not to mention maybe submit a few yourself.

Tue, 09/16/2008 - 10:59amBe careful with Mantis Shrimp. Adult mantis can easily cut off a finger. Maybe not in 1 bite but it'll hurt.
What I like in reef tanks is marine life synergy.
For example you can have a goby (small catfish like fish) and pistol shrimp. They actually live together in a cave (wink wink). Fish brings food and shrimp protects fish eggs. This is amazing.
Same with anemone. Anemone can sting (even humans) any fish/predator but Clown fish. So it protects clown fish and clown fish bring it food. This is so fun to watch.
p.s. sorry to hijack a tv show thread. But i can watch my fishtank longer than TV ;-)

Tue, 09/16/2008 - 10:43pmWe've worked through Dead Like Me, Veronica Mars (1st Season is best), Millenium, and The Dresden Files. We're working on Carnivale, but we're slow.
Other hobbies include knitting, and absorbing as much sunshine as humanly possible before the rain sets in, any week now. Looks like it might turn next week, right on schedule. DOOM IS HERE! ENJOY YOUR LAST WEEK OF SUNSHINE! OH SHIT!
Oh, I play D&D with Matthew and our friends. And I read comic books.

Wed, 09/17/2008 - 7:28amI take back my previous positive comments about Fringe. I saw episode 2 and it was just plain terrible.

Wed, 09/17/2008 - 9:40amLets see...Work, eat, Wow, Sleep oh yea..there's some family time in there also. Dr. Who when I see its on although I tend to get the episodes online since they tend to be ahead of Sci Fi. or were when it first came out. Never really got into BSG...Starbuck is a playboy not a woman
I entertain thoughts of running and or hiking but being oppresively hot around here kind of puts the kibosh on doing that...

Wed, 09/17/2008 - 4:25pmHay guyz, Heroes starts again on Monday and I can't wait. <3 That and Lost are really the only shows I've kept up with. I really liked Friday Night Lights but never got to finish the 2nd season (kept forgetting to download them since I wasn't home when it was on). Now I must watch it again..
