Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

I just finished this book while I was gone. I think anyone who enjoys the lore of warcraft would really enjoy it. It's really well written and the story is totally original, as far as I can tell. Right now, I feel like it's one of my favorite books. So go read it so I have someone to talk to about it. Thanks.

i just ordered it from amazon. i've been looking for a new book to read of the fantastical and humurous variety. i'll come back with a book report in a few days.

Talious just got the New Tolkien book. He's really excited about it. Mostly b/c it has a picture of the Echoriath Mountains in it.

I actually lost interest in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. The writing style bogged down in London and I haven't gotten back to it since.

I'm almost through with the second book in the Eragon series. The movie was horrifyingly bad, like, seriously, never watch it. The books (2 or the 3 are published right now) are pretty well done and if you're into easy to read fantasy I recommend them. :)

Also recently finished Good Omens. I'm a huge Pratchet fan but for some reason I'd never read that one. Fam if you're into fantasy/sci-fi/fiction type satire I'd recommend this one as well any pretty much anything by Pratchett or Gaiman.

i just finnished this yesterday and it was AWESOME

you have to trudge through the first two chapters but after that it's as good as anything he's ever done.

have you read fragile things? it's gaimen's newest book of short stories. i bought it because it has a novella sequel to american gods, with shadow as the main character and everything. turns out thought that the first story in the book was my favorite: Sherlock Holmes meets Cthulu mythos. Need I say more? It's worth buying the novel for.

I got about 85% of the way through Strange&Norrell and stopped reading because I'd completely lost interest. Possibly the only work of fiction I've given up on like that in the last twenty years.

(My usual rule, which I still follow pretty religiously, is to put down any novel that hasn't solidly captured my attention by the time I've read the first 100 pages, or the first 50 pages for books under 250 pages in length.)

Some of the ideas are interesting, and the atmosphere and finer details are very well crafted, but after a certain point the plot and characterizations both just seemed to drift somewhat aimlessly.

I should go find the new Gaiman book. I really liked Smoke and Mirrors and keep rereading it over and over.

Also, for a while Brizzle's brother had your (Fap) icon for his icon on AIM or maybe livejournal and now I keep thinking you're him :P

Sounds familiar...it's saved me from Grisham and from finishing anything by Tom Clancy as well. :D

Definitely <3 Ender's saga!

I liked the Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell novel. They're making it into a movie. There's also a new collection of short stores by Susanna Clarke entitled "The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories". It's basically a bunch of Fairy Tales with some of the characters referenced from the novel. It's worth picking up if you like JS & Mr. N. For me I liked the later half of the novel and the descriptions of the alternate fairy world. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Ok, I picked up American Gods but I realized that the main character is reoccuring, which made me want to get whatever book initially introduced him instead. I couldn't find that one so I was torn between AG and Neverwhere. And then as I was leaving with AG one of the other clerks was like "you should read Neverwhere!" across the store.

>_>

Anyhow, uh, yea, going to be reading AG.

AG is where Shadow first appears and is far superior in writing quality to Neverwhere (in my opinion). Neverwhere was his first novel and it shows; the writing is not as tight and cohesive, and his Voice is not yet developed. He comes off as trying really really hard to be all weird and fantastical, whereas in his works after Neverwhere he's all weird and fantastical without even trying. That said, totally read Neverwhere because it's cool, however AG is a better quality book.

I just read a review of "The Ladies of Grace Adieu" in a mythology journal online (here's the journal for those who like mythology stuff: http://www.endicott-studio.com/), it was fabulously well recieved.

OIC.

I'm about 60 pages into AG and it's interesting, and strange. I like it though, I've reread a lot of little bits b/c I like how he describes stuff well using very few words.

So I finished American Gods after taking a detour 65% of the way through the book and reading If Chins Could Kill, which was hilarious and I recommend it to all Bruce Campbell fans. Anywho, American Gods was brilliant and I <3 Neil Gaiman.

man, i keep meaning to read If Chins Could Kill because I love Bruce Campbell.

I'm really glad you liked American Gods. If you really like Niel Gaiman you should really concider reading the Sandman Series. It's long but totally worth it. It's 10 books long, with two paripherals that come after (Endless Nights and this japanese folk tale that Gaiman retells). If you haven't read the whole series I really recommend it. If you thought American Gods was awesome, you will be totally blown away by the comics. They are his best work, in my opinion.

Also, Fragile Things is worth reading. It's bunch of short stories but there are really only two that make it worth buying. The first story in the book is a Cthulu story staring Sherlock Holms in 1800's London. The last story in the book is a continuation of Shadow's story.

I'll definitely look into the Sandman series, 10 books isn't that bad....I'm a huge Pratchett fan and I've read all of his almost 30 Discworld books plus most of the other random novels. I'm currently without a new book to read so I'll have to hit up the store this weekend.
